Method of Performing Umrah

The four main rituals of Umrah

Umrah is performed through four actions: two obligatory (Fard) and two necessary (Wajib) acts.

The two obligatory (Fard) acts of Umrah:
1. Wearing Ihram.
2. Performing Tawaf.

The two necessary (Wajib) acts of Umrah:
1. Performing Sa’i.
2. Shaving the head or trimming the hair.

The two obligatory (Fard) acts of Umrah

1. Wearing Ihram

Things to do before wearing Ihram:
Before wearing the Ihram garments, complete general personal grooming tasks (cut nails, trim hair, shave unwanted body hair) and take a full bath (ghusl) properly.

The two necessary (Wajib) acts after wearing Ihram:

  • Make the intention (niyyah) for Umrah: " (اَللَّهُمَّ اِنِّي اُرِيْدُ العُمْرَةَ )" (O Allah, I intend to perform Umrah).
  • Recite the Talbiyah at least three times: "لَبَّيْكَ اللَّهُمَّ لَبَّيْكَ، لَبَّيْكَ لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ لَبَّيْكَ. إِنَّ الْحَمْدَ وَالنِّعْمَةَ لَكَ وَالْمُلْكَ، لَا شَرِيكَ لَكَ."
  • Reciting the Talbiyah after wearing Ihram is mandatory. If someone does not recite the Talbiyah, their Ihram will not be valid.

Men should recite the Talbiyah aloud, while women should recite it softly.

Prohibited actions while in wearing of Ihram

  • Using perfume.
  • Cutting nails, removing or trimming any hair from the body.
  • Sexual intercourse between husband and wife.
  • Engaging in sexual desires, romantic conversations, or touching with desire.
  • Hunting animals.
  • Shaving or cutting hair from the head or any part of the body.
  • Arguing or quarreling.
  • Prohibited actions for men while in wearing of Ihram

  • Wearing stitched clothing, such as pants, shirts, pajamas, coats, socks, sweaters, jackets, etc.
  • Covering the head and face.
  • Wearing footwear that covers the top of the feet. It is prohibited to wear shoes that cover the area above the ankle.
  • Prohibited actions for women while in wearing of Ihram

  • Women are not allowed to display jewelry or adornments.
  • Gloves should not be worn.
  • Niqab (a face-covering with slits) should not be worn over the face, and the face should not be covered unless in the presence of non-mahram men.
  • Killing lice on clothes or the body is prohibited.
  • 2. Performing Tawaf

    Method of Tawaf:

    • Make the intention (niyyah) for Tawaf.
    • Talbiyah is not recited during Tawaf.
    • Start the Tawaf from the Black Stone (Hajr al-Aswad) by saying "Bismillah Allahu Akbar" (بِسْمِ اللَّهِ اللَّهُ أَكْبَر).
    • Ramal: Men are required to perform Ramal (walking briskly with small steps) during the first three rounds. The remaining four rounds should be walked at a normal pace. Women are not required to perform Ramal.
    • Iztibah: Men should keep their right shoulder uncovered during Tawaf.
    • Between Rukn Yamani and Hajr al-Aswad, recite the following du'a:
"Rabbana atina fid-dunya hasanatan wa fil akhirati hasanatan waqina 'adhaban nar"
    • After completing Tawaf, it is obligatory to pray two rak'ahs of prayer.
    • After the prayer, drink Zamzam water.

The two necessary (Wajib) acts of Umrah

    1. Performing Sa'i

    Steps for Performing Sa'i:

    1. Intention (Niyyah) for Sa'i: Before starting Sa'i, make the intention to perform Sa'i for the sake of Allah.

    2. Start Sa'i from Safa Hill: Go to Safa hill and face the Kaaba. Then, recite the following verse:

      Verse: إِنَّ الصَّفَا وَالْمَرْوَةَ مِن شَعَائِرِ اللَّهِ ۖ فَمَنْ حَجَّ الْبَيْتَ أَوِ اعْتَمَرَ فَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيْهِ أَن يَطَّوَّفَ بِهِمَا ۚ وَمَن تَطَوَّعَ خَيْرًا فَإِنَّ اللَّهَ شَاكِرٌ عَلِيمٌِ

    3. Praise and Supplication on Safa Hill: While standing on Safa, face the Kaaba, raise your hands, and praise Allah with the following:

      Supplication: اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ اَللهُ اَكْبَر

Then recite the following supplication three times:

      Supplication: لَا اِلَهَ اِلَّا اللهُ وَاللهُ اَكْبَر – لَا اِلَهَ اِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهُ – لَهُ المُلْكُ وَ لَهُ الْحَمْدُ يُحْيِى وَ يُمِيْتُ وَ هُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيئ قَدِيْر

    4. Walk from Safa to Marwa: After making supplication, begin walking towards Marwa. While walking, you will pass a green-marked area.

      • For men: Run between the two green-marked points.
      • For women: Walk at a normal pace.

During this, recite the following supplication:

      Supplication: رَبِّ اغْفِرْ وَارْحَمْ وَ اَنْتَ الْاَعَزُّ الْاَكْرَمُ

      Prayer at Marwa:

Upon reaching Marwa hill, face the Kaaba and recite the following prayer again:

      Supplication: لَا اِلَهَ اِلَّا اللهُ وَاللهُ اَكْبَر – لَا اِلَهَ اِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيْكَ لَهُ – لَهُ المُلْكُ وَ لَهُ الْحَمْدُ يُحْيِى وَ يُمِيْتُ وَ هُوَ عَلَى كُلِّ شَيئ قَدِيْر

      Final Prayer after Completing Sa'i:

After completing the Sa'i between Safa and Marwa, make the following supplication to Allah:

      Supplication: رَبَّنَا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ السَّمِيْعُ الَعَلِيْمُ – وَ تُبْ عَلَيْنَا اِنَّكَ اَنْتَ التَّوَّابُ الرَّحَيْمُ

    2. Shaving the head or cutting the hair

Shaving the head or trimming the hair is wajib (obligatory) after completing Umrah. After that, the pilgrims will become halal (permissible to exit the state of Ihram).

May Allah, the Lord of all worlds, grant everyone the ability to perform Umrah and Hajj at His sacred house. Ameen.

    FAQ's

Question 1.  If someone omits a Wajib (obligatory act) during Hajj and Umrah, what is the ruling in Islam?

    Answer 1
If someone omits a Wajib act during Hajj or Umrah, such as spending the night in Muzdalifah or shaving the head, they must offer Fidya (Dam).

    • Dam: Sacrifice of a goat, one-seventh of a camel, or one-seventh of a cow, and distribute the meat to the poor in the sacred area of Makkah.
    • If unable to offer Dam: They must fast for ten days (three days during Hajj and the remaining seven after returning home).

Question 2.   If prohibited acts are committed while in the state of Ihram?

    Answer 2

For acts such as wearing stitched clothing, covering the head, using perfume, shaving the head, or cutting nails, there are three options:

    1. Fast for three days.
    2. Provide food to six needy people, giving each half a Sa' (approximately 1 kg) of food.
    3. Sacrifice a goat.

Question 3.   If sexual acts or intercourse occur during Hajj and Umrah?

    Answer 3

  • If sexual intercourse takes place before the initial release from Ihram restrictions, a camel must be sacrificed. If this is not possible, they must fast for three days during Hajj and seven days after returning home.
  • If intercourse occurs during Umrah, a goat must be sacrificed, and the Umrah will be invalidated.
